The project is part of the Program for Creating Multifunctional Spaces in Shelters of Higher Education Institutions in Ukraine, initiated by CLUST..
Architects: Pavlo Peker, Anton Stepanov.
Completed in 2024.
CLUST SPACE is an innovative project initiated by CLUST and its founder, Ruslan Tymofeev, combining the functions of a modern coworking space with a secure shelter. Opened on January 25, 2024, in the basement of the Scientific and Technical Library at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI), this space has become a hub for student life, offering areas for studying, events, individual or team work, relaxation, socialising, and even sleeping. In its first year, over 200 events were held within the space.
To transform the former archive in the library’s basement into this public space, a comprehensive renovation was undertaken, including functional zoning and the installation of modern engineering systems. The 600 m² area accommodates up to 500 people simultaneously. For comfort and safety, the facility features a ventilation system, smoke extraction, fire alarm and evacuation control systems, as well as uninterrupted power supply, water, and sewage. The ventilation system is equipped with filters, allowing occupancy for up to 72 hours even under chemical or radiological air contamination.
During air raids, safety is paramount. Therefore, glass partitions are reinforced with film to prevent shattering, and the ceilings and walls are free from elements that could fall and cause injury. Furniture is designed without sharp corners to minimise injury risk. Acoustic panels are installed to reduce noise levels, and thoughtful lighting ensures a comfortable environment for work and relaxation.
CLUST SPACE is a charitable project for higher education institutions, offering various facilities, including fixed workstations, meeting rooms, video call capsules, relaxation zones, and a kitchen.
The success of the project at KPI has led to its expansion. A second smart shelter, CLUST SPACE, has been opened at Dnipro National University named after Oles Honchar, confirming the relevance and demand for such spaces in Ukrainian educational institutions.
CLUST SPACE exemplifies how modern architectural solutions and collaboration between businesses and educational institutions can create safe and comfortable environments for youth development, even in challenging times.
